Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

12 weeks. Real clinical work. Built for men.

Our IOP is the primary level of care at Cardinal Recovery Center. It’s where most men do the work that changes things. Structured enough to hold you accountable. Flexible enough to fit your life.

What IOP actually is.

Intensive outpatient treatment means you’re in structured clinical programming multiple days a week while living at home or in sober living. It’s not a support group. It’s not check-ins. It’s real clinical work: group therapy, individual sessions, and a curriculum built to address the patterns driving the behavior. You’ll be challenged. You’ll also be supported by a team that knows what they’re doing and by a group of men going through the same work.

CURRICULUM

Eight themes. Twelve weeks. One honest look at what's been driving the pattern.

Our IOP curriculum covers eight core themes in sequence, each building on the last. The order is intentional. The work compounds.

THEME 1

Relational Dysfunction

Attachment patterns, relational styles, and the dynamics that keep men stuck in the same conflicts. Most of what brings men into treatment has a relational root. We start here.

THEME 2

Distress Tolerance

What do you do when things get hard? Most men have one move. We expand that range so stress doesn’t automatically produce the same outcome.

THEME 3

Emotional Regulation

Understanding what an emotion actually is, what drives it, and how to work with it rather than against it. This is foundational to everything else.

THEME 4

Self-Soothing and Self-Care

The specific skills men use to settle a dysregulated nervous system and maintain the baseline that makes everything else possible.

THEME 5

Positive Affect

Most men in treatment are fluent in what’s wrong. We work on building the capacity for genuine positive experience: interest, play, connection, delight.

THEME 6

Self-Esteem

Shame drives more behavior than people realize. We work on the story a man carries about himself and help him build a more accurate, more honest one.

THEME 7

Mindfulness

Mindfulness as a clinical skill: the ability to observe your own experience without being controlled by it. Not meditation for its own sake.

THEME 8

Meaning-Making

What are you building toward? Recovery without a direction is fragile. We close with identity, values, and what comes next.

SCHEDULE

Built around your life, not the other way around.

We offer both morning and evening groups so the IOP schedule works alongside work, family, and other responsibilities. Both groups run the same clinical curriculum. Our admissions team will help you find the right fit during intake.

OPTION 1 (4 Days Per Week)

Morning Group

Full curriculum. Daytime hours. Ideal for men whose evenings are committed to family or work.

OPTION 2 (3 Days Per Week)

Evening Group

Full curriculum. Evening hours. Ideal for men who need to maintain daytime work or school.

Why our IOP is different from most.

Most IOP programs cover coping skills and call it clinical. We go deeper. Our program is built on four frameworks that explain behavior at the root, not just the surface.

Attachment Theory

Early relational experiences shape how men manage stress, seek connection, and respond to conflict. We work directly with those patterns.

Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT)

MBT teaches men to understand their own mental states and other people’s. When that skill collapses under stress, everything else follows. We rebuild it deliberately.

Embodied Recovery

Stress and dysregulation live in the body. Somatic and experiential approaches help men access what talk therapy alone can’t reach.

Metacognition

Most men don’t struggle with knowing what’s right. They struggle with the thought patterns that override it. Metacognitive work targets that gap directly.

Learn it.

Practice it.

Live it.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What people ask before they call.

How long is the IOP?

12 weeks. Morning groups meet four days a week. Evening groups meet three days a week. You’ll know your schedule before your first day.

Can I work while in IOP?

Yes. That’s why we offer both morning and evening groups. Most men in our program maintain work and family responsibilities throughout treatment.

What's the difference between IOP and OP?

IOP is more intensive: more days per week, more clinical contact, more structured curriculum. OP is a lower-intensity option for men who have completed IOP or who need flexible ongoing care. We’ll tell you which one makes sense for your situation.

Do I need to have been in treatment before?

No. Some men come to us directly. Others are stepping down from a higher level of care. Either way, we start with a full clinical assessment and build your treatment plan from there.

Is IOP covered by insurance?

Most major insurance plans cover IOP. We verify your coverage before your first appointment. Call us or fill out the insurance form and we’ll handle it.
